W. B. "Red" Harper HARPER, W. B. "RED" age 78, of Vincent, died May 29, 2005 at his home on Logan Martin Lake. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Y. Young, by his dear Grandfather, Grover Cleveland Harper and his parents, William Belton Moore and Clara Melviny Harper. He is survived by one son, Kenneth C. Harper and First Cousins, Gwendolyn Pitts, Walter Sims, Irene Cox, Douglas Harper and Jim Harper. Mr. Harper proudly served in the US Navy during World War II, serving on PT Boats and on USS San Juan (CL54) from l943 to l946. Mr. Harper retired as Chief of Weights and Measures Division, City of Birmingham in l978. He was Past President of the Southern Weights and Measures Association, serving in l975. He was Past Chairman of the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC by Presidential Appointment. He was a Past Commander of American Legion Post 109, Pell City, Alabama in l990-1991 and Past District Commander of American Legion District 15 in l992. Mr. Harper was also a Master Mason, Ben M. Jacobs Lodge in Pell City. Graveside service is Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at Elmwood Chapel for procession. Visitation is Tuesday May 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to graveside service. Johns-Ridout's, Elmwood Chapel directing.
